Martin and Welma’s Tulbagh Wedding
“I lived in the Sabi Sands for four years, working as wine sommelier, before I met Martin. One evening after the dinner service I was sitting alone in the lodge listening to the African sounds of lions roaring, the nightjar’s song (so typical to the bush) and the odd vervet monkey calling in the distance, while sipping on two favourite wines at the same time – Vilafonte Series C and M.
The wines were so different from each other. I remember falling in love with the aromas, character, and the feeling I had reminded me of how it feels to fall in love. At that hour of the night, the wine’s soul was connecting with mine, and it left me so intrigued with the person behind the making. (At the time, I had no idea Martin was the winemaker!)
When we met two years later, through a mutual friend, it felt like we had known one another for many lifetimes, even though we had never met or seen a photo of each other. He told me I had a lot of freckles and I told him I was his biggest fan…
Destiny showed us the way!
We got married at Paserene Lief, Martins’s co-farm in Tulbagh. The farm has a big place in our hearts. The Magic Forest where we held our ceremony is self-explanatory. There are energies around that only reflect love and support new beginnings. (Just like the forests we dreamed about when we were children – they do exist!)
The Manor house building is one of the most amazing art pieces on the farm. The fact that there is no roof, means the stars shine brightly overhead, like only they can do in Tulbagh. It’s breathtakingly beautiful!
